Sea-Urchin UK is a new dealer in North Wales aimed at providing Kayaks and Small Sailing Craft to people & families who are new to the sport or who just want to get out on the water and have some fun. At this year’s North Wales Boat Show, alongside the range of Sit in & Sit on Kayaks they will be showcasing the new O’pen BIC sail boat. Set to cause a mini revolution in the type of boat many young people will learn to sail in. Since its launch in 2006, the O’pen BIC has changed the face of dinghy sailing for children and teenagers alike by giving them a true glide machine for real excitement on the water. In 2007, the distribution of the O’pen BIC has reached a level similar to that of the 470s and 420s when they were being sold at the peak of dinghy sailing. Not since the 1970s has a dinghy been sold worldwide at such a rate! This type of success allowed the O’pen BIC to recently obtain ISAF “Recognised Status”.
The O’pen BIC was a success with the kids right from the start. Besides the fact that it is simply great fun to sail, it quickly demonstrated its suitability for racing. Established in late 2006 the International Class Association, recognising the skiff like performances of the boat, started to propose exciting and innovative new race formats including slalom and banana courses, long distance and O’pen Cross (including compulsory freestyle moves).
The fi rst international events took place this summer throughout France, Italy, Chile and the United States.
The enthusiasm of the sailors for this new style of racing proved that you can race and have fun at the same time.
The racing also gave a chance to those less experienced and less familiar with the traditional Olympic style courses.
The basic rules? No protests, permission to touch the buoys, and at least two results can be discarded from the
fi nal standings. In essence, not far from those rules used for windsurfi ng !
Though in the stronger winds capsizes were quite frequent at fi rst, this was of little importance as with the
completely open hull, no bailing is required and the sailors are back up and sailing again in less than 10 seconds.
As a result of the success this summer, the ISAF Council attributed the O’pen BIC Class “Recognised Status” at
its Annual Conference in early November. This status helps validate the O’pen BIC for use in sailing clubs and
schools worldwide. The fi rst World O’pen Cup will be held at Carnac, Brittany, France, 18-20 July 2008, and over
100 boats are expected to be at the startline…
With a worldwide distribution in more than 35 countries, the International Class Association continues to grow
from strength to strength and further events have already been confi rmed for 2008 in the USA, Italy and Holland.
The O’pen BIC… for ENERGIZED sailing!

Press Release from Tim Long of Abersoch Boatyard Services Ltd. Regarding :- North Wales Boatshow 2008.
We are pleased to confirm that we will be exhibiting at the 2008 North Wales Boatshow to be held at the Vaynol Estate near Bangor at the end of July. The show will give us our first opportunity to showcase the five carefully selected brands that we now represent in the North Wales region.
It has been our intention to exhibit at a boatshow for some time now and the first North Wales Boatshow seems like the ideal show for us to begin with. Being only a short distance from our base in the tourist resort of Abersoch we will be able to take full advantage of the shows location. We have watched the South Wales Boatshow with interest over its two year history and have been impressed with its growth. With the North Wales event being organised by the same team we are sure it will grow just as quickly.
We have secured the support of most of the brands that we deal with including, MasterCraft, Rib-X and Ocean Kayak. We are hoping that we will be able to also interest Delphia Yachts and Yamaha in supporting us at the show. On our stand we will be displaying a wide range of craft from the brands that we represent. We will also have information about the yard in general and what we have to offer apart from boat sales. Being the only true multi purpose boatyard in North Wales we are looking forward to showcasing all we have to offer the boating public of North Wales and the North West.
